Scenes SHIFT + R1 · SCENE
A scene is a song section — intro, verse, drop — remembered as what is playing: which tracks are silent, and which pattern each of the others plays. Build it, capture it to a pad, and bring it back with one tap.
- Top four rows: 32 scenes. Grey is empty, blue holds a scene, green is the one playing — the same colours as project and preset slots.
- Bottom row: the eight tracks of the current track page. Tap to mute or unmute; the track’s colour means it plays, dark means it is silent. SHIFT + B1–B8 moves along the track pages, as everywhere else.
- Tap a scene to launch it at the top of the next bar, so the change lands in time with the music however loosely you tap. The pad blinks green while it waits. A bar is 16 steps, four beats.
- Tap the blinking scene again to change your mind, or tap another to replace it. Stopping forgets what was waiting, and while playback is stopped a tap launches at once — there is no bar to wait for.
- Hold REC and tap a pad to capture what you are hearing into it. REC is on the panel, so this is one hand on each surface. The scene pads turn red while it is held, so it is clear that tapping writes instead of launching. Capturing over a scene replaces it.
- CLEAR + a pad erases a scene. DUPLICATE + pad + pad copies one, which is the quick way to make a variation.
- Tapping a scene while the song is playing takes over from it. The song stops moving on to its next section and leaves you performing; stop and play again in Song mode to hand it back.
- A scene launch drops any solo. Solo is for listening to one track; leaving it up would hide the scene you just launched.
- Getting here and back: SHIFT + R1 from any mode — or SCENE, the panel’s first button, in one press. R1 goes back to Note mode and R4 to Pattern, so the two places you came from are both one press away. The scenes sit on the note button’s layer because a scene is what you reach for between takes of the thing you were just writing.
- REC on its own still starts and stops recording — it only captures when a pad is tapped while it is held.
Writing a set
- Mute tracks on the bottom row until the section sounds right.
- Hold REC and tap an empty pad. It turns blue: that is your intro.
- Unmute the drums, hold REC, tap the next pad. That is the drop.
- Perform by tapping pads. To fix a scene, launch it, change the mutes and capture over it again.
What a scene holds
- Which tracks are silent, for all 64 tracks, and which pattern each track plays. Launching a scene puts the tracks back on those patterns, so a section changes the music and not only the mix.
- To change what a scene plays, launch it, pick other patterns in Pattern mode, then capture over it. Auditioning patterns without capturing leaves the scene as it was — the next launch brings it back.
- Scenes are saved with the project. The mutes themselves are not: they belong to the session, and opening a project starts with everything playing until you launch a scene.
- The bar is fixed at 16 steps for now; it will become a Global setting, so other time signatures can have their own.
- The numbers on the pads are the scenes themselves: the song is a list of them, so a scene keeps its number as the song grows.
